In 2018, January 24th was declared worldwide by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Day of Education. This day highlights the role that education plays in promoting peace and prosperity in countries. Education is considered to be the most powerful tool available to break the cycle of poverty, eliminate gender inequalities, and stimulate economic growth.
This year, the 7th International Day of Education 2025 is titled “Artificial Intelligence and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation.” Its aim is to explore how education can help humanity understand and guide Artificial Intelligence (AI), ensuring better control over this new type of technology. On January 24th, UNESCO will host a full-day, in-person event at its headquarters in Paris to examine the new possibilities that AI can offer to learning, teaching, and assessment, while also promoting the development of critical AI-related skills.

There is no doubt that AI represents a revolutionary development, not only in the field of education but in all sectors. Its integration into education is advancing rapidly, as AI can be applied in multiple areas such as teaching, material creation, student assessment, and school administration. However, it is important to ensure that AI complements, rather than replaces, learning. In this respect, educators and students need support in order to be in a position to use AI productively. Research must play a decisive role in this effort.
The University of Limassol aims to promote research toward identifying productive ways of using AI in schools and in the sector of education in general.
