What does it take to build & manage a successful virtual team - especially in times of crisis?

Whether we saw it coming or not, dispersed workforces are today’s business reality.

The current global pandemic has changed the way we work, interact, communicate and think – perhaps forever. Coronavirus has compelled employees from organisations of all sizes to work from home for the foreseeable future. Meetings have moved to video conferencing, there has been a sudden and widespread uptake of online tools and digital solutions, and teams have had to learn to collaborate and innovate over distance.

Whilst at first glance it may appear that managing a virtual team is similar to running traditional teams, leaders across the country are fast learning this is not the case. There is clearly a need for a new approach, different skills and fresh considerations when managing remote workforces. For starters, leaders can no longer rely on the trusted methods of communication and team-building that they used to rely upon in order to shape a productive virtual team.

But how do leaders acclimatise to this new business landscape, keep up with the constant demands that such a relentless rate of change has in-store, and ensure we are serving those who report into us in the most effective and appropriate way?

For many, this may seem like a daunting or intimidating ask. It may appear difficult to keep pace with technological changes, taxing to learn new methods for doing a familiar task, or uncomfortable to invest time and resources into new digital tools that relinquish a degree of perceived control. The truth, though, is that the abundance of new, user-friendly tools actually makes it easier to lead and collaborate across distance than ever before. This new way of doing things represents an exciting and unchartered frontier ahead of us, which will reward those that step up to the challenge and develop new levels of competence.
