As the education world explores strategies to equip students with the skills and knowledge, they’ll need to be successful innovators in a 21st century workforce, there has been a growing emphasis on STEAM — the educational discipline that engages students around the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.

Many educations experts regard STEAM as an essential component of 21st century education. According to European Commission Guidelines for state members, “The European Commission is promoting the development of more fit-for-purpose STEM and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) higher education programmes based on the STEAM – science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics –approach to education . . .  This approach facilitates the blending of knowledge between STEM and non-STEM fields of study and embeds experiential learning. The STEAM approach fosters better contextualisation of STEM subjects in political, environmental, socio-economic, and cultural terms”.

The STEAM approach helps to tackle both crucial skills shortages and to encourage the development of transversal skills driving entrepreneurship, innovation, and creativity. This work is supported by the EU STEM Coalition funded under the Erasmus+ programme and the actions outlined in the European Skills Agenda. Enhancing such skills lies at the heart of STEAM education. Additionally, STEM and STEAM graduates play a vital role in developing meaningful solutions to societal problems.

Pressure for STEAM integration to traditional curricula at all education levels is not only European but Worldwide.

This year Cyprus Ministry of Education, to address the European Guidelines, introduced Experimental STEAM schools. Private schools also make efforts to fully incorporate STEAM.     Informal Education providers (private institutions) have been introducing STEAM related topics the last years. Demand for STEAM Educators training is increased.

ΣΚΟΠΟΣ ΣΕΜΙΝΑΡΙΟΥ

The program aims to train educators in good practices of integrating STEAM approach within the courses they offer. The goal of the program is to optimize and maximize the development, evolution, efficiency and productivity of educators at all levels (universities, colleges, primary and secondary education of private and public sector as well as afternoon schoolteachers working in afternoon private institutions).


Upon completion of the training program, participants will be able to:

At the level of knowledge

Name modern learning theories applied to STEAM teaching and learning

Name tips for effective STEAM teaching and learning.

Mention tools that enhance the STEAM educator's teaching practices and support effective STEAM learning.

 

At the skill level

  • Apply modern learning theories to effective STEAM teaching.
  • Apply didactic design knowledge using digital technology for the effective STEAM teaching and learning.
  • Incorporate technology-enhanced (for the effective STEAM teaching and learning) learning activities into training program they implement.
  • Design a STEAM course to support active students’ learning.
  • Implement effective STEAM teaching tips in course delivery.
  • Develop appropriate tools for evaluating their STEAM Learning outcomes using technological tools.
  • Create interactive videos and include in STEAM learning practice.
  • Create infographics and posters and include in STEAM learning practice.
  • Utilize the Internet and include in STEAM learning practice.
  • Create attractive electronic learning material and include in STEAM learning practice.
  • Create digital portfolios and include in STEAM learning practice requesting your students to create their own e-portfolios.
  • Create electronic quizzes for students’ assessment and include in STEAM learning practice.

Demonstrate a willingness to adopt effective training techniques (suitable for teaching a STEAM course).

Accept the added value of STEAM approach in teaching and learning in 21st century.

• Encourage other colleagues to integrate STEAM approach to the courses they teach.

ΣΕ ΠΟΙΟΥΣ ΑΠΕΥΘΥΝΕΤΑΙ

The program is addressed to:

Educators, at all levels (universities, colleges, primary and secondary education of private and public sector as well as afternoon schoolteachers working in afternoon private institutions). The course is ideal for educators who already teach STEAM/robotics and want to further enrich their lessons. The training as well could be adapted for the beginners who would like to implement the STEAM curriculum in their workplaces.
